SERINA
The origins of the town seem to date back to the first century BC at the time of the Roman domination, when the whole Serina valley was reunited under the town hall of Bergamo. The first settlements date back to this period, created also thanks to the discovery of iron mines in the area near the border with Dossena.

Even the toponym dates back to Roman times, seems to be connected to that of the Serio river, located in the Seriana valley. This was to indicate a flowcurrent, attributable to the stream, homonymous of the town, which crosses the upper part of the valley.

However, the first written documents that attest to the existence of the village date back only to the 11th century, a period in which Serina began to carve out an important space in the trade. In fact, this basin the Via Mercatorum passed, an ancient trade route that connected the Seriana valley with the upper Val Brembana, which had the most important village in Serina.

In this regard, some documents dating back to the Italian Risorgimento, attest that Serina had almost 1 500 inhabitants, even double the nearby town of San Pellegrino Terme.

The economy experienced periods of great splendor thanks to the Roman mines for the extraction of iron, which allowed the development of workshops suitable for the processing of the extracted material, which was used for the construction of various iron weaponstools.

The wool industry also benefited the presence of the Ambria torrent, which allowed the operation of machinery for the production of Bergamo's coarse cloth.

The medieval period saw the center under the power of the Guelph family of the Torriani since the year 1265. This influence lasted until the fifteenth century when the arrival of the Venetian domination led Serina to be the capital of the Brembana Superiore Valley (complete with a vicar della Serenissima) role that it held until 1797, when the area became part of the Cisalpine republic.

It should be remembered that the town was the birthplace, in 1480, of the painter Jacopo Negretti, better known as Palma il Vecchio.
